Subcoal® pellets travelling the globe

Farmsum, June 10th, 2011. On June 10th the new plant of Qlyte, a spin-off company of the Dutch multinational DSM, celebrated its official opening in Delfzijl. In the facility Subcoal® pellets are produced from waste streams coming from, among others, the paper industry. The pellets are used in lime kilns and power plants to replace fossil fuels like coal. By using the Subcoal® pellets of Qlyte, one not only significantly reduces CO2 emissions, but also reduces fuel costs. No wonder the pellets are being used in a large part of Europe.

Initially the factory, of which the construction was completed in February 2010, would be opened earlier. A fire in November 2010, during trial production, however delayed the opening. Despite this setback management and staff quickly put things back on track, and now the factory runs at full speed.
The Subcoal® pellets are produced using a physical process explains one of the two directors, Ralph Koekkoek. Together with his partner Mohammed Nafid he is in charge of Qlyte. "The raw materials, mainly paper-plastic waste from the northern and the central part of the Netherlands and Germany, is being upgraded and purified. Recyclable materials such as aluminium and iron are being separated. Also, PVC and most of the water are being removed. In the end, pellets are being made that can be co-combusted by end-users in their existing plants. "
