Urmond/Amsterdam, February 12, 2008 – Stamicarbon / DSM Licensing Center, the licensing department of Royal DSM N.V. and Qlyte B.V. today announce their cooperation for the commercialization of the Subcoal® technology. In this partnership Qlyte, a spin-off company from DSM, will exclusively commercialize DSM’s proprietary Subcoal® technology in Europe.

DSM and Qlyte will jointly continue technology development for the Subcoal® technology. Pejman Djavdan, Managing Director of DSM Licensing Center: “We are excited about the capabilities of Subcoal® technology and our cooperation with Qlyte to further develop and commercialize this technology in Europe. This fits our strategy to leverage our technologies through strategic partnerships.”

Subcoal® technology

The Subcoal® technology concerns DSM's proprietary process and application technologies for the separation and processing of cellulose/plastics fractions from municipal solid waste, industrial waste and/or reject streams from the paper and pulp industry. These cellulose/plastic waste streams can be processed to high-quality fuels with energy equivalence to coal. Subcoal® product can be co-combusted in coal-fired power plants, lime kilns, cement kilns and/or other industrial furnaces. The cellulose fraction of the fuel is CO2 neutral and therefore helps to reduce CO2 emissions by these furnaces. In 2000, the Subcoal® process technology for the manufacturing of high-quality fuels has successfully been implemented in a large scale paper mill of SmurfitKappa in Roermond (the Netherlands).
